Pope Francis meets with Vietnam’s prime minister

October 20, 2014

Pope Francis met on October 18 with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung of Vietnam, who has led the Communist nation since 2005.

The meeting, according to the Holy See Press Office, “marks an important step in the process of strengthening bilateral relations between the Holy See and Vietnam, this being the second visit of Prime Minister Dung to the Vatican, following that of 2007.” The two states do not have diplomatic relations.

The Pope and the prime minister discussed “the Church’s commitment to contributing to the development of the country,” and “sincere appreciation was expressed for the support given by the authorities to the Catholic community in keeping with the developments sanctioned by the Constitution of 2013.”

Additional issues, “it is hoped, will be further examined and resolved through the existing channels of dialogue,” the statement added.
