Malta’s leading prelate resigns
October 20, 2014
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Paul Cremona, Malta’s leading prelate, at the age of 68.
The Dominican prelate, who has led the Archdiocese of Malta since 2006, cited exhaustion and said he had been contemplating resignation for two years. According to the Times of Malta, he said that the saddest point in his tenure was the legalization of divorce.
Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna, once the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s chief prosecutor in sex-abuse cases, will lead the archdiocese until the Pope names a replacement.
