Honduran cardinal: strong family ties are ‘best defense against poverty’

September 16, 2014

Caritas Internationalis, the Church’s confederation of relief and development agencies, and the Pontifical Council for the Family are holding a seminar on September 18 devoted to the family and the economic crisis.

“With so many challenges, our blood families, our global human family and our spiritual family have become more important than ever in ensuring we don’t fall into loneliness and desperation,” said Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga of Honduras, the president of Caritas. “Where economic and social systems fail, the solidarity and protection of families are the best defense against poverty.”

“The outcome of the meeting will form a basis for proposals to the upcoming Extraordinary General Assembly Synod of Bishops on the family held at the Vatican,” Caritas stated in a press release.
