African cardinal: synod will not change Catholic teaching on marriage

September 09, 2014

A South African cardinal has told Vatican Radio that the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the family will not change Catholic teaching on marriage, which he noted is founded on the words of Christ.

Cardinal Wilfrid Napier of Durban also said that the teaching of St. Paul on examining oneself before receiving Holy Communion, lest one eat and drink judgment upon oneself, is perennially valid.

The prelate also said that he believed that in some previous synods, insufficient attention was paid to the differing nature of problems and concerns in various geographical regions.
