Baptist campus newspaper editorial criticizes indulgences
February 27, 2009
The editorial staff of the newspaper at the nation’s largest Baptist university has criticized indulgences. The staff laudably sought out a diocesan Web site to explain the conditions for gaining a plenary indulgence, but was unfortunately influenced by the story line-- common in recent news stories-- that indulgences are now being revived after disappearing. Thus the editorial writers seem unaware of Pope Paul VI’s 1967 apostolic constitution on indulgences, the teaching of the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church on indulgences, Pope John Paul II’s extraordinary indulgences for the year 2000, and explanations of the biblical basis of indulgences.
