Accused bishop contributes to sex-abuse settlement in Massachusetts diocese
December 03, 2008
The Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, has reached a $4.5 million settlement to resolve lawsuits brought by sex-abuse victims, including at least two men who lodged accusations against former Bishop Thomas Dupre. The former bishop reportedly contributed his own funds to the settlement. Dupre-- who was indicted on sex-abuse charges, but escaped prosecution because the statute of limitations had elapsed-- resigned in 2004; neither his attorney nor the Springfield diocese will disclose where he now lives.
