Reform world trade system to provide equity for all
December 03, 2008
At a UN meeting on international finance, being held this week in Doha, Qatar, a Vatican representative has prodded nations to take more effective action to serve the needy by ensuring equitable systems of world trade. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the Holy See's permanent observer at UN headquarters in New York, asked world leaders to show "the political courage which is necessary to build a world in which human life is placed at the centre of all social and economic activities." The Vatican envoy observed that when world leaders show enough commitment, enormous resources can be mobilized. He said: "The recent financial crisis demonstrates that when political will is combined with concern for the common good we are able to generate, within months, substantial funds for financial markets."
