Argentine prelate calls Cardinal Martini's book 'scandalous'

December 03, 2008

Archbishop Hector Aguer of La Plata, Argentina, has sharply criticized new book by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the retired Archbishop of Milan. The Argentine archbishop said that the book "casts doubt on truths and practices continuously taught by the Church;" he objected in particular to the Italian cardinal's questions about Catholic teachings on homosexuality, contraception, and the male priesthood. Cardinal Martini, the archbishop said, has accepted the perspective of secularists and of "those elements within the Church that have embraced dissent against the magisterium." Archbishop Aguer acknowledged that some Catholics welcomed the cardinal's outspoken comments, "with all due respect to the illustrious cardinal I fear that for most of the faithful, they have been scandalous.”
