English cardinal suggests religious artwork belongs in church

December 01, 2008

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor of Westminster, England, said that a masterpiece by Piero della Francesca, The Baptism of Christ, would be better suited for display in a church rather than a museum. "It is a mistake to treat it as a work of art; it is a work of faith and piety," the cardinal said. An official of the National Gallery, where the painting is now displayed, suggested that the museum setting is preferable because "visitors can experience this masterpiece in any number of ways, according to their beliefs or, indeed, lack of beliefs."
