Exodus of Christians imperils Church witness in Iraq, bishop says

Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk has expressed concern about efforts by the European Union to welcome 100,000 Iraqi refugees, many of them Christians. The Iraqi archbishop acknowledged that Christians face serious dangers in the country, and lack effective political leadership. Nevertheless he said that a mass exodus of Christians from Iraq, where the faith has prospered since ancient times, "means losing the true meaning of the Christian message, which invites us to mission, not retreat."
