Anonymous Vatican official says Kmiec is unlikely US ambassador

Questioned about speculation that Douglas Kmiec could be appointed as US ambassador to the Holy See for the Obama administation, an unnamed Vatican official told the Catholic News Agency: "It will never happen." Kmiec, a Pepperdine Law School professor with a long history of involvement in the pro-life movement, angered his old allies when he began a prominent supporter of Obama's presidential candidate. The quoted official-- identified only as an official of the Secretariat of State-- said that the Vatican would not want an ambassadorial appointment to alienate American pro-lifers.
