US bishops come to defense of Mormons over California marriage initiative

November 26, 2008

Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, chairman of the US bishops' Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, offered ‘prayerful support’ to the Mormon community in the wake of ‘hostility and abuse’ recently suffered following the passage of the California initiative defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. ‘We have watched with great distress in recent weeks as some members of society have reacted intemperately, and sometimes even violently, to the decision of the voters in support of Proposition 8 in California,’ said Bishop Kurtz in November 21 letter to Mormon leader Thomas Monson. ‘We have been especially troubled by the reports of explicit and direct targeting of your church personnel and facilities as the objects of hostility and abuse. We pray that prudence and healing may prevail.’
