Sicilian 'Godfather' figure now said to lead devout life in prison
November 25, 2008
The Sicilia Mafia kingpin who was arrested in 2006 after decades of thwarting prosecutors now spends his time in an isolated prison cell praying and reading the Bible, according to a sympathetic member of the Italian parliament. Bernardo Provenzano "lives like a kind of monk," the lawmaker said. Police are skeptical. Provenzano used the Bible as the basis for secret message to associates during his 43-year flight from police, and he would not be the first crime figure to find a sponsor in public office.
(Provenzano is a native of Corleone: a town whose name will be recognized by American readers familiar with The Godfather.)
