Sri Lanka shrine to re-open for Marian feast day

November 25, 2008

The shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, will reopen in time for a traditional pilgrimage on the feast of the Immaculate Conception: December 8. The pilgrimage-- in which Buddhists and Hindus as well as Christians participate-- was endangered when the shrine was closed in April, and the beloved image of Our Lady of Madhu was removed, because of shelling by Tamil Tiger rebels. Government forces secured the area later that month, and established a demilitarized zone around the shrine.
