California to investigate Mormon marriage-amendment efforts
November 25, 2008
Responding to a complaint by Californians Against Hate, which favors same-sex marriage, the California Fair Political Practices Commission announced yesterday it would investigate whether the Mormon church accurately reported its financial efforts on behalf of Proposition 8, the November 4 ballot initiative that defined marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
Meanwhile a rash of attacks of vandalism against Mormons-- including the burning of the Book of Mormon on the steps of a temple-- have prompted police to begin hate-crime investigations, with homosexual activists as the likely targets.
Californians Against Hate’s ‘dishonor roll’ of marriage amendment supporters includes individuals and religious organizations. Leading the list is the Knights of Columbus, which contributed $1,425,000 to support the ballot initiative.
