London Times speculates on replacement for Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor

November 24, 2008

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, who as Archbishop of Westminster is the leading figure in England's Catholic hierarchy, is ready to step down at the age of 76 and will discuss a retirement date when he meets with Pope Benedict later this month, according to the London Times. The Times may have inside information from the cardinal or his associates, and in any case since the cardinal-- like all bishops-- submitted his resignation letter when he reached his 75th birthday, it is reasonable to expect that he will soon be replaced. However, the remainder of the Times story should be regarded as speculative. The list of likely candidates for the Westminster appointment is a list compiled by the Times, not the papal nuncio-- whose own list, the Times concedes, has not yet been finalized.
