Scientific research must heed moral principles, Vatican official says
November 18, 2008
Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella, the president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, has written in L'Osservatore Romano that scientific research goes "out of bounds" if it is not guided by ethical principles. “When we speak of human life, we are not dealing with material that can be manipulated, but rather with intrinsic dignity that deserves respect at the very least,” the archbishop wrote. Scientists should not regard the Church as an opponent of research, he said, because the Church will encourage the search for truth, but "in the same way the freedom of the Church to express her own teaching cannot be limited by any scientist or scholar who thinks we should not talk about these issues.”
