Conditional explanation of perceived facts or their relationship. It is therefore never in conflict with definitely established truths, nor yet to be considered as definitive or certain. Its function is to offer a tentative explanation that suggests further experiment and verification. (Etym. Greek hypothesis, a placing under, supposition.)
