Around the blogs today

By Domenico Bettinelli, Jr. (articles ) | Oct 30, 2003

Here's what's new and interesting on Catholic blogs today:

  • Fr. Rob Johansen is a priest from Michigan who went to Florida to provide spiritual assistance to the family of Terri Schiavo. He's now the man on the spot who provides better information about Terri's situation than CNN or the New York Times. Read his blog regularly to stay up to date.
  • Mark Shea responds to an email from a reader who doesn't like his calling certain homosexual activists "brownshirts." Mark clarifies what he means by the term.
  • Tom Fitzpatrick has the true tale of the haunted rectory and a family member's encounter with the "ghost." Appropriate for the day before Halloween.
  • Amy Welborn defends herself against accusations made against her and Mark Shea by well-known right-wing, gay blogger Andrew Sullivan. Read the entry and then click on the links to previous items to see the whole conversation.
  • An interesting look at a young American priest's mission in the Dominican Republic. It's mainly a day-by-day view of his life, but it's a fascinating view into a world most American Catholics don't see.
  • Canonist Peter Vere weighs in on Terri Schiavo being denied Holy Communion.
  • Matthew, a Notre Dame student studying in Rome, is one of the regular contributors at the Shrine of the Holy Whapping and recounts his experience at the reception for Cardinal George Pell put on by the Knights of the Holy Sepluchre.
  • John da Fiesole of the Disputations blog discusses common misconceptions about the phrase: "the ends do not justify the means."
  • Kairos Guy notes a news story that says 15 percent of the 50 million schoolkids in the US will be molested by a school employee. So why do teachers and school systems get a free pass while priests and the Church get the (deserved) endoscopic treatment?

"Around the Blogs" represents a great compilation of intelligent, stimulating, and -- dare I say -- entertaining, material. Keep at it.

Please do continue your "Around the blogs today" report. Those commentators don't show up as links in most Catholic and other religion-related sites. I appreciate being made aware of them, even with the increasing demand on time to check them out. Thanks.

Thanks for the "Around the Blogs" feature. There's some very good stuff out there and I usually miss it. Jim S.
