CWN Editor's Note: Activists from more than 80 different countries have joined in an initiative called the Casablanca Declaration, aiming at a worldwide ban on surrogate motherhood.

The Casablanca Declaration—named for a conference on the topic that was held in Morocco in 2023—argues that surrogacy means “the exploitation of poor women and the sale of children.” The group points to the toll that the practice takes on women, primarily in impoverished regions, while reaping financial rewards for those who organize the process.

The surrogacy industry is estimated to bring in over $22 billion annually worldwide.
