Leaders of Legion seen jockeying to retain posts

As Vatican-watchers await the appointment of a papal delegate to oversee the Legion of Christ, the leaders of the religious order have issued a statement claiming that few Legionaries were aware of the double life led by their founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel.

Responding to a Vatican statement on the results of an apostolic visitation, the leaders of the Legion of Christ have claimed that despite the founder's misdeeds, the Vatican realizes that within the order "the majority knew nothing, including those who are currently in command of the Legion." In fact the Vatican statement referred to a "system of relations" that protected the founder from scrutiny: a reference that seemed to implicate at least some other members of the Legionary leadership.
