Bishop clarifies statement that devil is behind abuse suits

A recently appointed Illinois bishop has clarified remarks made in a 2007 homily in which he said that clerical abuse lawsuits were the work of the devil.
“While in the context of a homily I did say that the devil is the force behind the attack, ‘particularly directed against bishops and priests,’ apparently I did not make myself clear that it is the sins of priests and bishops who succumbed to the temptations of the devil that have put their victims and the Catholic community in this horrible situation in the first place,” says Bishop-elect Thomas Paprocki of Springfield.

The organized effort to force people with sometimes fuzzy memories of clerical abuse to sue the Church is funded by plaintiffs' lawyers. The ultimate objective, I believe, of the organizations behind the lawsuits is not to purify the Church, but to eradicate it from the U.S.
