Rhode Island bishop again denounces Catholic politicians supporting abortion in health-care reform
November 04, 2009
Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, has denounced efforts to find "backdoor ways of providing subsidies" for abortion in the health-care reform bill pending in the US Congress. The outspoken bishop said that any Catholic legislators who support these efforts "really have to question their membership in the Church."
Bishop Tobin, who issued a public rebuke to Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy for questioning the bishops' opposition to the proposed legislation, has disclosed that he will meet with Kennedy on November 12 to discuss the matter.
