New Lima archbishop seen as marked shift from predecessor

CWN Editor's Note: Pope Francis has promptly accepted the resignation of Opus Dei Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, 75, as archbishop of Peru’s leading archdiocese, and has appointed Father Carlos Gustavo Castillo Mattasoglio, 68, a theologian at the Pontifical Catholic University in Peru, which which Cardinal Cipriani has clashed. John Allen writes that the two have had markedly different responses to liberation theology, adding, “It’s still fairly unusual to see a cardinal’s legacy disassembled in real time quite like this, especially one who has been in charge of his archdiocese for almost 20 years.”
