Taiwan leery of new Vatican moves toward closer ties with Beijing

January 25, 2018

CWN Editor's Note: Political leaders in Taiwan are concerned about reports that the Vatican has encouraged ‘underground’ bishops of mainland China to resign, allowing for their replacement by bishops who have Beijing’s recognition. If the Vatican moves to establish formal diplomatic ties with Beijing, it would likely mean the end of the current diplomatic mission in Taipei. (The Vatican now has a mission—not an embassy—in Taiwan, and no formal ties with Beijing.)
