India: Catholic group warns against decriminalization of homosexuality

June 29, 2009

With India's federal government leadership hinting that it might be prepared to abolish a law that treats homosexual activity as a crime, a Catholic group has cautioned against the move. The Catholic Secular Forum, in a statement released on June 29, pointed out such a move would "against Indian culture and social mores of the country." The Catholic group further noted that 86% of India's HIV-positive residents are believed to be homosexuals, who could become "hyperactive" if the legal provision against homosexual acts is repealed. A petition demanding the abolition of that "archaic" provision is already pending before the federal supreme court.
