Venezuela asks Vatican to mediate in crisis
July 22, 2016
The government of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has reportedly agreed to a proposal from opposition leaders to ask for Vatican mediation in talks aimed to end the country's political and economic crisis.
Maduro's government and the opposition Democratic Unity coalition have been unable to reach any agreement to end the crisis, which has caused serious shortages of food and medicine, and led to breakdowns in power and sanitation services.
The Vatican has not yet responded formally to the request for mediation.
