African bishops plead for peace in South Sudan, condemn all violence
July 19, 2016
The Catholic bishops of eastern Africa have denounced the bloodshed in South Sudan and condemned "all acts of violence without exception."
"Fighting for whatever reason is an act of unjustifiable evil," said a statement released by the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMACEA), signed by Cardinal Berhaneyesus Souraphiel of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The AMACEA statement welcomed the many calls for an end to fighting in South Sudan. "We add our voices to theirs and urge all soldiers and civilians to refrain from all actions that can ignite and escalate the situation," the bishops said.
