Important passage missing from early translations of interview with Pope-emeritus Benedict

March 21, 2016

The first English-language translations of a rare in-depth interview with Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI accidentally dropped an important passage in which the retired Pontiff discussed the necessary role of Jesus Christ in the economy of salvation.

In the neglected passage-- now available on Catholic World Report-- Benedict speaks with approval about the theologian Henri de Lubac's theory of "vicarious substitution." The passage comes in the context of a discussion about whether it is possible to attain salvation outside the Church.
