Chile moves toward legalization of abortion
March 21, 2016
In a 66-44 vote, the lower house of Chile’s National Congress voted to permit abortion in cases of rape or disability.
President Michelle Bachelet’s government supports the bill, which awaits a vote in the upper house.
“This decision constitutes a grave offense against human dignity and in particular an attack on the life of the most innocent of all beings,” the nation’s episcopal conference said in a statement following the vote.
