Ethiopian drought puts 8 million in jeopardy
January 07, 2016
Ethiopia is facing its most serious drought in 50 years, theatening millions of lives, the international charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) reports.
The UN reports that 8.2 million people are in urgent need of food, and as many as 1 million have already left their homes to seek support elsewhere. The toll of the drought threatens to match the devastation of 1984, when over a million people died in Ethiopia.
ACN, which provided $1.2 million to support Church-related projects in Ethiopia last year, has sent $500,000 in emergency help to the country’s Catholic dioceses. UN officials say that much more help will be needed if the drought persists.
