US State Department backs gay envoy, raps Dominican cardinal

The US State Department has strongly backed the country's openly homosexual ambassador to the Dominican Republic, who has been the focus of criticism by Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez of Santo Domingo.

While the cardinal has charged that Ambassador James "Wally" Brewster is trying to impose American ideas of sexual morality on the Dominican Republic, a State Department spokesman countered by suggesting that the cardinal is taking a stand in opposition to human rights:
That there may be those opposed to the promotion of human rights in various societies around the world is not surprising, but it does underscore why this work is so important.
The State Department confirmed that US foreign policy is "dedicated to eliminating barriers to equality, fighting discriminatino based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and engaging LGBTI communities around the world."

This is most unfortunate as there is some truth to charges of this nature. I back the Cardinal.

Good point, James W. I would like to see Putin's reaction if Wally were assigned to Russia. I am sure the Moscow Primate would not sit idly by while Wally worked his own brand of evangelization on the sovereign people of the historic Rus.

For some reason that I find hard to understand, President Obama has not assigned any openly gay ambassadors to any Islamic countries. Of course there they execute homosexuals.
