Pope confirms he will visit Ciudad Juarez, on US-Mexican border, in February
November 25, 2015
Pope Francis has confirmed that he will visit Mexico in February, and make a stop at the American border.
During his flight from Rome to Nairobi, at the start of a 6-day visit to Africa, the Pontiff told reporters that he would travel to Ciudad Juarez, which lies just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. His stop in the border city will undoubtedly focus attention on the situation facing immigrants seeking entry into the US.
Pope Francis disclosed that he had originally hoped to travel to a Mexican border city in September when he visited the US. That plan was dropped, in order to avoid taxing the Pope's stamina with extra travel. But in mentioning that he would visit Ciudad Juarez next year, the Pope said that "I wanted to enter the United States from this city."
