Priests banned, Pentecostals beaten in India’s Chhattisgarh state

November 20, 2015

Some villages in the largely Hindu eastern Indian state of Chhattisgarh continue to ban the presence of priests despite a court decision ordering a halt to the ban, according to a report from UCA News.

“The atmosphere in the state is not very conducive for Christians anymore,” said Father Abraham Kannampala, vicar general of the Diocese of Jagdalpur. “We feel threatened, as we are a small minority.”

On November 15, violent Hindu activists entered a Pentecostal church in one village, beat the worshippers, and demanded they reconvert to Hinduism, according to the report.
