Leading Islamic scholar in Egypt condemns attack on Coptic church

November 13, 2015

The head of Al-Azhar University, the leading university in the Sunni Muslim world, has condemned an attack on a Coptic church in Cairo.

Sheik Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the imam of the Egyptian university, said that assaults on houses of worship "go against the authentic Islamic religion and its teachings of tolerance.” He said that violence such as the November 12 attack on a Coptic Evangelical church should increase “the determination of Christians and Muslims to remain united and to support together the fight against terrorism waged by the Egyptian authorities.”

The Coptic church in Cairo was attacked by armed men on motorcycles, who shot at security guards outside the building, injuring one police officer.
