Vatican denies top cardinals are suspects in 'Vatileaks II' investigation

November 10, 2015

The Vatican has rejected Italian media reports that high-ranking prelates are suspected of involvement in the latest leaks of confidential documents.

“There is not basis” to the reports that four cardinals are being questioned, said Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office. Those reports, he said, were “absolutely false.”

Father Lombardi specifically denied that Italian law-enforcement officials have spoken with Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, the director of the Vatican City Governorate, about the leaks. The investigation into the leaked documents is being led by Vatican officials rather than Italian police.

In a related development, the ANSA news agency, citing anonymous Vatican sources, said that investigators aim to resolve the “Vatileaks II” case before the Jubilee Year of Mercy begins on December 8. ANSA reported that investigators have interviewed a number of people at the Vatican, but have not identified any new suspects in the case.
