Cardinal Gracias explains procedure for final Synod votes

October 22, 2015

At an October 22 briefing at the Vatican, Cardinal Oswald Gracias said that the committee drafting a final statement for the Synod of Bishops had received several hundred suggested amendments.

Cardinal Gracias, who is a member of the writing committee, said that the group had completed and approved a draft, which was be submitted to the body of bishops on Thursday. The Synod will then focus on that draft during discussions on Friday, and a final draft will be presented on Saturday, subject to approval by a vote of the Synod fathers. The final statement will be submitted for approval on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis, the Indian cardinal said.

Questioned about the topic that has caused the most heated debate at the Synod, the proposal to allow divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion, Cardinal Gracias said that “to be honest, we don’t have a solution.”
