Venezuela cardinal says mercy calls for repentance

Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino  of Caracas, in an address to the Synod of Bishops, said that while the Church should always show God's mercy to sinners, that mercycalls for repentance.

"Mercy invites the sinner, and it becomes forgiveness when one repents and changes one's life," the Venezuelan prelate said. He made the point that the father of the Prodigal Son embraced him-- but only when the son had returned to his father's home.
