Prelate: pass DC school-choice bill

October 07, 2015

The chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education has called upon Congress to pass the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act of 2015, sponsored by John Boehner (R-OH).

The bill provides scholarships for low-income families to attend private schools, including Catholic schools.

Since its inception in 2001, the Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP) has been an educational lifeline for nearly 6,000 children from low-income families in the District of Columbia," Archbishop George Lucas of Omaha said in an October 5 letter.

He added:

The Catholic Church has consistently taught that parents have the right and responsibility to serve as the primary educators of their children. To assist them in this sacred duty, the Church has articulated clearly that children have the universal right to an education, and the state has a fundamental obligation to support parents in fulfilling such a right.
