World Meeting of Families begins in Philadelphia

September 23, 2015

The eighth World Meeting of Families began in Philadelphia on September 22.

Attracting over 17,500 participants from 100 nations, it is the largest meeting in the history of the event, which is organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family and has been held every three years since 1994.

“Today marks a moment we have been preparing for over the course of three years,” said Archbishop Charles Chaput. “It’s an incredible joyful, exciting time here in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the entire region.”

The event’s principal speaker on September 22 was Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron of Los Angeles. Cardinals Robert Sarah and Peter Turkson are among the speakers on September 23.
