El Salvador: archbishop opposes telecom tax
September 22, 2015
El Salvador’s leading prelate has spoken out against a government proposal to levy a 10% tax on mobile phones, televisions, and other telecommunication services, according to a report in one of the nation’s leading newspapers.
Warning that the poor would be disproportionately affected, Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas of San Salvador said that “I am not against taxes, but they must be fair.”
“This is not the way to bring the country forward and be transparent; this should be paid by people who have more income,” he added.
