Pakistan bans English translations of sacred Islamic terms
July 07, 2015
The government of Pakistan has made it illegal to translate certain Islamic terms into English.
The new policy, issued during the month of Ramadan, prohibits rendering “God” or “mosque” or “prophet,” among other words, into English; the Arabic words must be used, the Fides news service reports.
The effect of the policy on Pakistan’s Christian minority is not clear. Some Christians fear that it will allow for greater exploitation of the existing laws against blasphemy.
