Leading Russian Orthodox figure meets with Pope

Pope Francis received Metropolitan Hilarion, the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, in audience on June 15.
The two discussed “the dire situation facing Christian population in the Middle East and North Africa, the necessity of common actions in defence of traditional understanding of the family in modern society, and cooperation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church in the sphere of culture,” according to the Moscow Patriarchate.
Metropolitan Hilarion met separately with Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
