Confirmed: Pope will visit Cuba in September

April 22, 2015

Pope Francis will travel to Cuba in September, the Vatican has confirmed.

Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, announced on April 22 that the Pope would visit Cuba “before his arrival in the United States.” The announcement confirms reports that had circulated in Rome for the past week.

No date was given for the Pope’s stop in Cuba. However, the Pontiff is due to arrive in the US on September 22. Typically the Vatican does not release an exact schedule for papal trip until a few weeks before the trip.

Pope Francis will be the third Roman Pontiff to travel to Cuba, following visits there by St. John Paul II in 1998 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
