Burundi: bishops argue against unconstitutional 3rd presidential term

Burundi’s Catholic bishops have stated their opposition to a plan by President Pierre Nukurunziza to run for a third 5-year term.

The bishops said that the African nation could “fall back into divisions, clashes, or war” if the president ignored the country’s constitution, which limits a president to two terms. The bishops’ statement could carry great weight in Burundi, where Catholics make up more than 75% of the population.
