Pope enjoys broad popularity in US, poll shows

March 05, 2015

Pope Francis enjoys broad popularity in the US, a new public-opinion survey shows.

The Pew Research Center, in February poll, found that 70% of the American public views the Pope favorably. Among Catholics, 90% view him favorably, and 57% “very favorably.” Those figures rival the peak popularity ratings for St. John Paul II in the 1990s.

The Pope’s popularity ratings are consistent in every category measured in a breakdown of the Pew results: men and women, old and young respondents, political conservatives and liberals. His rating is highest (95% favorable) among Catholics who attend Mass at least weekly.
