Oklahoma priest removed from post after civil marriage

February 24, 2015

An Oklahoma priest who was recently removed from his pastoral assignment had entered into a civil marriage.

Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City said: “After I removed Father Dan Letourneau from his assignment at St. Joseph Old Cathedral on Tuesday, it came to my attention that he had recently entered into a civil marriage.” The archbishop said that this was “obviously a very serious violation of the commitments, obligations and duties of priesthood.”

The archdiocese has not announced the original reason for removing Father Letourneau from his post, except to say that no criminal activity was involved.

Letorneau was married in a civil ceremony last November.

You think whoever "brought it to the Bishop's attention" could have done it sooner?
