Border bishop offers House testimony on immigration legislation
February 13, 2015
Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tuscon appeared before the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security on February 11 and testified against three immigration bills: the SAFE Act, the Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act, and the Protection of Children Act.
The prelate then made policy recommendations for comprehensive immigration reform, as well as recommendations related to employment verification, detention, and refugee protection.
“We are hopeful that, as our public officials debate this issue, that immigrants, regardless of their legal status, are not made scapegoats for the challenges we face as a nation,” Bishop Kicanas said in his conclusion. “Rhetoric which attacks the human rights and dignity of the migrant are [sic] not becoming of a nation of immigrants. Neither are xenophobic and anti-immigrant attitudes, which only serve to lessen us as a nation.”
