Vatican newspaper: time between the 2 synods is one of ‘reception, deepening’

January 23, 2015

The year between the extraordinary and ordinary synods of bishops on the family is a time of “reception” and “deepening,” according to a front-page article that appeared in the January 23 edition of L’Osservatore Romano.

Father Maurizio Gronchi, a professor at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, said that local dioceses are called to welcome the final document produced by the extraordinary synod and engage in a process of “attentive and responsible discernment” on the pastoral care of the family.

“What is indisputable-- the indissolubility of marriage between a man and a woman, its uniqueness and openness to life-- must be held together with what requires further study, that is, pastoral attention towards the most difficult situations,” added Father Gronchi, whom Pope Benedict named a consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Father Gronchi concluded by quoting Blessed Paul VI’s encyclical on the Eucharist: “with the advance of an understanding of the faith, the truth of faith will remain unchanged.”
