Islamic State continues mass executions, destruction of churches

December 29, 2014

Officials of the Islamic State have blown up a Catholic church outside Mosul.

The Church of the Virgin Mary, which had been cleared and locked last week, was destroyed by bombs. Other Christian churches in the region have been taken over by the Islamic State to be used as jails or command centers.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that the Islamic State has executed nearly 1,900 people since proclaiming the establishment of a caliphate in Syria and Iraq in June of this year. That figure includes both soldiers who were killed after being captured and civilians who were beheaded, stoned, or otherwise executed because of opposition to the Islamic regime.
